Tampa, Fla. � (February 12, 2010) � Truck Writers of North America (TWNA) has recognized the rust preventative coating on ArvinMeritor�s PlatinumShield Brake Shoes as the top technical achievement for 2009. The award presentation took place at the annual Technology & Maintenance Council (TMC) meeting in Tampa, Fla.

The Technical Achievement Award and trophy were presented to Mac Whittemore, ArvinMeritor�s Midwest Regional Manager, and Paul Greenlaw, ArvinMeritor�s National Fleet Manager-Aftermarket, by Paul Abelson (Road King and Land Line magazines) and Tom Berg (Heavy Duty Trucking and Construction Equipment magazines), both members of TWNA�s award committee along with John Baxter (Randall-Reilly Publishing), Peter Carter (Today's Trucking), Paul Hartley (AddMedia), James Menzies (Truck News and Truck West), and Jim Park (Heavy Duty Trucking).

The PlatinumShield coating was developed by ArvinMeritor to resist micro-abrasion caused by the movement of the brake lining against the shoe table during normal use. Rust-jacking occurs when rust forms on bare shoe metal under the lining, causing the lining to lift and crack.

�The Technical Achievement Award committee was impressed that ArvinMeritor's PlatinumShield coating offers a practical solution to rust-jacking, a problem that has frustrated countless maintenance managers and owner-operators in the U.S. and Canada,� said James Menzies, chair of the committee. �As trucking companies search for ways to lower their operating costs, ArvinMeritor has come to market with an effective solution to a costly, long-running problem.�

The review process for 2009 began with several candidates nominated by the press members of TWNA. From that group of candidates, four finalists were selected for an in-depth review. The "Top Four" finalists were ArvinMeritor�s PlatinumShield Brake Shoes, Eaton�s UltraShift PLUS Transmission, Rand McNally�s IntelliRoute TND 500 GPS, and TruckLite�s LED Headlamps.

Using a point system based on each committee member�s ranking of the candidates, ArvinMeritor�s PlatinumShield Brake Shoes scored a substantial lead to receive the honor of the 2009 TWNA Technical Achievement Award.

The very first Technical Achievement Award was presented in 1991 to Grote Industries for its red LED marker light. Since receiving the inaugural award, Grote has sponsored the yearly trophy. TROY, Mich. (Feb. 4, 2010) � Meritor WABCO Vehicle Control Systems has announced the availability of its patented Single Piston PAN 22 Series Air Disc Brake at Hendrickson International. Effective immediately, the brake can be specified on selected Hendrickson trailer axles and INTRAAX� and VANTRAAX� suspensions.

The lightweight and long pad life single piston air disc brake utilizes WABCO�s tested and European-field proven technology. A large usable pad material volume increases lining life to maximize vehicle up time. An integral molded friction pad virtually eliminates rust jacking.

�Our reliable internal sealed automatic adjuster lessens brake out of adjustments providing uniform stopping performance, while minimizing brake fade,� detailed Mark Melletat, Trailer Systems director for Meritor WABCO. �This is especially important with the demands of today�s highly congested roadways. It�s a cost effective and lightweight solution that is optimized for on-highway line haul axle ratings up to and including 23,000 lbs., and ideal with 22.5 inch wheels.�

At 79 pounds including pads, the PAN 22 weighs less than any other air disc brake in its class. Unique single piston brake design that results in fewer parts to service. ArvinMeritor Aftermarket Adds Another Innovative Solution: Hydraulic Brake Rotors for Medium-duty Vehicles

Las Vegas (Jan. 19, 2010) � ArvinMeritor�s Aftermarket business, responding to customer demand and an ongoing industry call for more rust-resistant brake components, today introduced hydraulic disc brake rotors with a new, patented coating, called ZXP3, designed to protect against oxidation and corrosion. It was announced here at the Heavy Duty Aftermarket Week.

The initial launch will cover three part numbers, with more models to be released throughout the year. The new coating will initially be applied to rotors with a cast-in ABS tone ring, and other applications for the coating are under research and development. The coated rotors will be distributed under the Meritor� and Euclid� brands through commercial vehicle aftermarket distributors and OE truck dealers in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico starting in January 2010.

Brake rotors are made of iron, and rust is a common problem particularly in the tone ring area. It forms quickly on bare metal and can lead to diminished ABS braking performance, corrosion, and metal fatigue. ArvinMeritor�s coating process ensures that the rotor receives a complete application.

�The coating adheres and seals thoroughly�even the outside edge of the cooling veins get coated�and will not wear or chip when exposed to heat, chemical deicers, wash solutions, pebbles, sand, or grime,� said Dennis Riedel, hydraulic brake product manager, Aftermarket. �After extensive testing both in the lab and in actual motor carriers� fleets, including 400 hundred hours of salt-spray testing, our coated rotors demonstrated improved service life over uncoated rotors.�

Named Standard Air Dryer for Daimler Trucks North America

TROY, Mich. (Dec. 23, 2009) - Meritor WABCO Vehicle Control Systems has announced that the Meritor WABCO System Saver 1200 Plus air dryer will be standard on all Daimler Trucks North America truck models starting in January 2010. Developed specifically for North American braking systems, the System Saver 1200 Plus is a high-capacity, spin-on air dryer that can be used in a wide range of vocational environments.

In addition to the standard spin-on cartridge, an interchangeable spin-on cartridge with coaslescing filtration is available for a higher level of air filtration to protect the vehicle�s air supply system for both braking and auxiliary devices.

The System Saver 1200 Plus sets the standard for adsorption capacity, performance, service life, and replacement time. It integrates the air dryer, 1200 cc of premium desiccant, and purge volume and governor into a single, compact, lightweight design that�s ideal for the space available in today�s aerodynamic vehicles. The direct mounting of the governor to the dryer simplifies the air brake system plumbing, reducing the risk of air leakage.

Meritor WABCO Air Disc Brake Technology Offers Alternative Solutions to Meet Stopping Distance Regulation Changes

TROY, Mich., (Aug. 4, 2009) � Meritor WABCO Vehicle Control Systems has announced that its current lineup of air disc brakes is capable of supporting North American truck operators to meet and exceed the newly-released U.S. federal government mandated, shortened stopping distance requirements.

�Our North American original equipment and fleet customers are well-positioned for selecting outstanding solutions to meet the new stopping distance requirements,� said Jon Morrison, president, Meritor WABCO Vehicle Control Systems, a joint venture between ArvinMeritor and WABCO Automotive Control Systems, Inc, a wholly-owned subsidiary of WABCO Holdings, Inc.

The company has worked for more than three years to prepare the Q Plus product in anticipation of this ruling. The Q Plus drum brake is currently undergoing the final phases of implementation testing to meet this new requirement.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the new standard requires a typical tractor-trailer traveling at 60 miles per hour come to a complete stop in 30 percent less distance (250 feet versus the existing standard of 355 feet). The new rule applies only to new truck tractors, and does not include single-unit trucks, trailers and buses. The new rule will be phased in over the next four years beginning with 2012 models.
