ArvinMeritor Earns State and National Recognition for Supporting Employees in the Military

Company Selected for Michigan �Pro Patria� Award; Nominated for National �Employer Support Freedom Award�

TROY, Mich. (May 29, 2009) � ArvinMeritor, Inc. (NYSE: ARM) has earned the highest level award in Michigan for providing exceptional support to its employees who serve in the U.S. military and is in contention for a similar national award from the U.S. Secretary of Defense.

The Michigan Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) will present ArvinMeritor with the Pro Patria award for providing exceptional support to its Guard and Reserve employees on May 30 at the regional awards dinner in Grand Blanc, Mich. The group selected ArvinMeritor over 26 other Michigan nominees in the large business category. It also nominated the company to represent Michigan in the national competition for the prestigious Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award.

ArvinMeritor�s military leave program includes:

Paying the difference between military pay and the employee�s base salary so that the employee�s family can maintain their current standard of living.
Employees receiving pay differential continue to earn savings plan benefits.
Employees on military leave can elect to maintain their company benefits package while on leave.
Vacation accruals continue while on military leave.
Over the last five years, 74 employees have taken one period of military leave � forty-one of those employees received pay differential from the company.

The final selection for the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award will be announced in late June or early July 2009.

DETROIT, May 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Dan Roche, senior director of Quality Systems within ArvinMeritor, Inc.'s (NYSE: ARM) Light Vehicle Systems (LVS) business group, received an Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) Outstanding Achievement Award at a ceremony held Monday, May 15. The Award is granted to individuals in recognition of substantial contributions made, and leadership on behalf of, the automotive industry.

"ArvinMeritor has long known Dan to be a tireless, impactful advocate of quality within the automotive industry," said Deborah Henderson, vice president of Quality, Engineering and Technology for LVS. Roche currently chairs an AIAG work group formed to discuss problemsolving processes for the automotive industry. The team's efforts recently resulted in the publication, Effective Problem Solving Guidelines, produced by AIAG. Roche also serves as a representative with the Ford Supplier Quality Roundtable and the GM Supplier Quality Council, and is a certified lead auditor for Quality TS16949. In addition to his involvement with AIAG, he is a senior member with the American Association for Quality.

Roche joined ArvinMeritor in 1993, and has held his current role for three years. Working Together: Supplier, school become a team

Five years ago, auto supplier ArvinMeritor broke ground on its facilities next door to Southwestern High School in Detroit, with its eye on expanding right into the school's football field.

Detroit Public Schools didn't cringe but sold the land to the company in exchange for $600,000 that was used last year for a new state-of-the-art football field, a track, baseball fields and tennis courts.

The company and the students have been inseparable ever since.

ArvinMeritor employees are at the school almost daily, helping teach math and science, coaching soccer, funding and coaching a robotics team and mentoring freshmen in a Big Brothers, Big Sisters program. ArvinMeritor also contributed to the $40,000 renovation of the auditorium and pays students $7 an hour to work in co-op positions.

It's the kind of business relationship that the Detroit Public Schools wants to find for each of its 225 schools this year as part of a district-wide community service initiative, district spokeswoman Mattie Majors said last week.

Principal Robert Hodge said that when the company contacted him and offered to help around the school, he paused because he didn't want to seem too greedy or too needy. The first contribution he asked for was the co-op program -- the hook that drew in the company's workers.

"They fell in love with our students," Hodge said Friday. That program led to Career Day, pickup basketball games with students and donations of computers or whatever else visiting employees found that the school needed, Hodge said.

The relationship is a perfect match because everyone involved gets something out of it, Jerry Rush, spokesman for Troy-based ArvinMeritor, said last week. ArvinMeritor makes suspension equipment.

The company helps groom and educate the students because the area around the school is part of the company's employee pool. Eighty percent of the 231 employees at the plant live in the two ZIP codes near the school, Rush said. For instance, Southwestern's soccer coach, Israel Morales, 22, who graduated from the school in 2001, lives nearby and works at the plant.

"This is fertile ground for the recruitment of people to work in our area," Rush said of the school. "We believe in the potential that is there."

Soccer players who practiced Monday on the football field that ArvinMeritor paid for said they were glad for their coach and the new football field -- despite the fact that the metal bleachers sat injured, picked apart by vandals and thieves.

Alonso Vazquez, 17, is a former Southwestern soccer player who graduated in June but is now helping the team. "The coach, he's good, but some Gatorades would be nice," he joked.

TROY, Mich., (Nov. 18, 2002) — ArvinMeritor, Inc. (NYSE: ARM) today presented the 2002 Community Excellence Award to Ervin Farmer, Jr., manufacturing supervisor assistant, Tool and Die, of the Fayetteville, N.C., facility. During a ceremony at ArvinMeritor headquarters in Troy, Mich., Larry Yost, chairman and CEO, recognized Farmer with the award for his outstanding contributions to his community.

The annual Community Excellence Award was established to celebrate achievement in the area of social responsibility. This award recognizes employees for community involvement performed outside the scope of job-related responsibilities. This includes involvement in educational initiatives, youth organizations, humanitarian service, and community improvement efforts.

Farmer is an active member of a number of local community organizations ranging from The Knights of Pythagoras, which focuses on teenage pregnancy, suicide and drug prevention, to the J.S.Spivey Summer Playground Camp, which provides breakfasts for kids in summer camp. As a member of these organizations, Farmer helps more than 700 kids a year in his community.
