Working Together: Supplier, school become a team

August 24, 2006

Source: Chastity
Pratt, Detroit Free Press

ArvinMeritor employees get involved at Detroit's Southwestern High
School, including Israel Morales, 22, of Detroit, left, who coaches the soccer
team. With him are Ricardo Vrito, 17, center, and Alonso Vazquez, 17. (KATHLEEN
GALLIGAN/Detroit Free Press)
Five years ago, auto supplier ArvinMeritor broke
ground on its facilities next door to Southwestern High School in Detroit, with
its eye on expanding right into the school's football field.

Detroit Public Schools didn't cringe but sold the land to the company in
exchange for $600,000 that was used last year for a new state-of-the-art
football field, a track, baseball fields and tennis courts.

The company and the students have been inseparable ever since.

ArvinMeritor employees are at the school almost daily, helping teach math
and science, coaching soccer, funding and coaching a robotics team and mentoring
freshmen in a Big Brothers, Big Sisters program. ArvinMeritor also contributed
to the $40,000 renovation of the auditorium and pays students $7 an hour to work
in co-op positions.

It's the kind of business relationship that the Detroit Public Schools
wants to find for each of its 225 schools this year as part of a district-wide
community service initiative, district spokeswoman Mattie Majors said last
week.

Principal Robert Hodge said that when the company contacted him and offered
to help around the school, he paused because he didn't want to seem too greedy
or too needy. The first contribution he asked for was the co-op program -- the
hook that drew in the company's workers.

"They fell in love with our students," Hodge said Friday. That program led
to Career Day, pickup basketball games with students and donations of computers
or whatever else visiting employees found that the school needed, Hodge
said.

The relationship is a perfect match because everyone involved gets
something out of it, Jerry Rush, spokesman for Troy-based ArvinMeritor, said
last week. ArvinMeritor makes suspension equipment.

The company helps groom and educate the students because the area around
the school is part of the company's employee pool. Eighty percent of the 231
employees at the plant live in the two ZIP codes near the school, Rush said. For
instance, Southwestern's soccer coach, Israel Morales, 22, who graduated from
the school in 2001, lives nearby and works at the plant.

"This is fertile ground for the recruitment of people to work in our area,"
Rush said of the school. "We believe in the potential that is there."

Soccer players who practiced Monday on the football field that ArvinMeritor
paid for said they were glad for their coach and the new football field --
despite the fact that the metal bleachers sat injured, picked apart by vandals
and thieves.

Alonso Vazquez, 17, is a former Southwestern soccer player who graduated in
June but is now helping the team. "The coach, he's good, but some Gatorades
would be nice," he joked.

(NYSE:ARM) today announced that it has been selected as a finalist for the Corporate Citizenship Award in the category of U.S. Community Service. The Corporate Citizenship Awards are hosted by the Business Civic Leadership Center (BCLC), a 501(c)3 affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

The award recognizes businesses and chambers of commerce for a specific community project that contributes to better business and society relations in the United States.

“We are honored to be considered a finalist for the Corporate Citizenship Award,” said ArvinMeritor’s Chairman, CEO and President Chip McClure. “Community service is ingrained in ArvinMeritor’s vision and culture. We constantly strive to partner with the communities in which we call home and are proud of the many employees who help make this a reality.”

ArvinMeritor is being recognized for its collaboration with Detroit’s Southwestern High School. The school is located near ArvinMeritor’s Light Vehicle Systems business group global headquarters. The company has financially supported the construction of a new football field, bleachers and track, in addition to helping revamp the school’s performing arts center and founding a $10,000 scholarship fund for higher education in the fields of technology, science and engineering.

In addition, many ArvinMeritor employees at its Detroit site participate in mentoring programs, including a robotics club, “Adopt-A-Class” and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. The company also partners with the school’s co-op business training curriculum.

“Partnering with schools to support educational initiatives is a top priority for ArvinMeritor, and we saw tremendous opportunity in reaching out to our neighbor, Southwestern High School,” said McClure.

School Principal Robert Hodge hopes to see this successful model partnership take root in other schools and businesses.

“Southwestern High School and ArvinMeritor are living proof that relationships between schools and industry can flourish,” Hodge said. “Together, we’ve the shared focus of helping our students grow and progress through education.”

Winners will be announced on Nov. 8 at BCLC’s seventh annual Corporate Citizenship Awards Dinner at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C. The celebration will be held in conjunction with the U.S. Chamber Board of Directors’ fall dinner.

BCLC’s mission is to advance the positive role of business in society. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world’s largest business federation, representing more than three million businesses and organizations of every size, sector and region.
ArvinMeritor Teams with White House Drug Policy Office to Steer Kids Away From Drugs

Company Promotes Parent-Child Communication as
Key to Drug-Free Youth

(Washington, D.C.) – The White
House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) announced today that
automotive supplier ArvinMeritor, Inc. is the most recent company to partner
with ONDCP’s National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign. The Michigan-based
global corporation joins a growing number of companies that recognize the value
in promoting youth drug prevention to customers and employees
nationwide.

Studies show that parents are the single biggest
influence on their children when it comes to drugs, and ArvinMeritor is taking
steps to educate the company’s parents and their customers on the importance of
family communication. The company is supplying its employees with the
Media Campaign’s youth drug prevention resources, displaying anti-drug posters
in English and Spanish in its facilities, and encouraging employees and
customers to seek information online by linking to the Media Campaign’s
award-winning Web site for parents, http://www.TheAntiDrug.com/, from
its company intranet and corporate Web site.

“Communicating with parents about the importance of
youth drug prevention is a top priority of the Media Campaign, and reaching them
where they work and spend much of their time makes good sense,” said ONDCP
Director John P. Walters. “ArvinMeritor is setting a terrific example for
companies across the country by making anti-drug information and resources
readily available to its employees and its customers.”

The partnership with ArvinMeritor is part of a
larger Media Campaign effort to enlist corporate America in youth drug
prevention. Businesses are encouraged to provide in-kind donations of
goods and communications services, as well as financial contributions to
underwrite advertising, programs and materials. Through collaboration with
business, the Campaign will reach more youth and parents with anti-drug messages

ArvinMeritor LVS President Encourages Technical Skills; Meets with Focus: HOPE Pre-Engineering Students

Troy, Mich. (May 9, 2002) — ArvinMeritor’s (NYSE: ARM) President, Light Vehicle Systems (LVS), Terry O’Rourke, today addressed 60 Detroit-area pre-engineering students at Focus: HOPE’s Machinist Training Institute in Detroit, Mich.

The Focus: HOPE students who attended the event are completing their last phase of the pre-engineering program, and are now faced with the choice of seeking employment or continuing their education through an advanced technology program.

In sharing his personal insight on the need for a “best-in-class,” well-educated workforce, O’Rourke said, “It is critical that students understand the need for advanced technical skills today and for the future. By speaking to the students at Focus: HOPE, we hope to encourage students to enhance their technical skill set. In doing so, we can increase the pool of talented engineers from which technology-based companies like ArvinMeritor can draw.

“An educated workforce is our greatest advantage. The number of students graduating with technical and engineering degrees continues to decline year after year. This is a concern not only for the automotive industry, but also for our entire nation. To address this challenge, business and education must work together to close the gap between the supply of, and the demand for, qualified engineering graduates."

ArvinMeritor is a key supporter of Focus: HOPE and has pledged a $250,000 grant in support of its Center for Advanced Technologies.

In support of O’Rourke’s comments to Focus: HOPE students, ArvinMeritor Chairman and CEO Larry Yost said, “Technical skills and expertise are fundamental components for competitiveness in the automotive industry and an important aspect in employee recruitment and development within ArvinMeritor.”

Focus: HOPE is a non-profit, civil and human rights organization located in Detroit, Mich. Co-founded in 1968 by Father William Cunningham and Executive Director Eleanor Josaitis, Focus: HOPE unites a multicultural community in intelligent and practical efforts to overcome injustice and build racial harmony. Over the years, Focus: HOPE has initiated practical solutions to the problems of hunger, economic disparity, inadequate education and racial divisiveness. Answers can be found in Focus: HOPE’s manufacturing and technology training programs; educational and corporate partnerships; Center for Children, and Food Programs.
