Meritor Suspension Systems Company to Close Sheffield, U.K. Plant
Sheffield, England (Nov. 11, 2004) — Meritor Suspension Systems Company (MSSC)
announced today the decision to close its Sheffield, England, stabilizer bar
plant following the conclusion of a 90-day mass redundancy consultation process
with its union, Amicus-AEEU. This action will affect 140 Amicus-AEEU union
represented employees and 30 staff employees. The 70-person industrial spring,
engine valve spring, and tool businesses are not impacted by this
decision.
“This is an undesirable and difficult position for
our business, our customers, and our employees. Unfortunately, this low-margin
operation could not recover from rising steel prices and surcharges,” said Steve
Scgalski, president and general manager of MSSC. “We are working with our
customers to support product deliveries until alternative source arrangements
can be made.”
In addition to the Sheffield facility, MSSC
produces coil springs, stabilizer bars and torsion bars in North America with
manufacturing plants in Milton, and Chatham, Ontario, Canada, as well as
Hopkinsville, Ky., in the United States.
