Creating a Diverse Workforce
ArvinMeritor understands the creative power that comes from bringing knowledgeable people with dissimilar backgrounds together. That power is our most unique competitive advantage and drives us toward our vision to be the number one supplier to the global motor vehicle industry.

With more than 19,000 employees in 25 countries, ArvinMeritor promotes a culture that provides opportunities for everyone to maximize their personal and professional potential. In turn, those employees use their unique skills, experiences and perspectives to ensure that our vision is achieved.

Reflecting Our World
Our diversity initiatives focus in four main areas: Workforce Diversity, Behavioral and Cultural Diversity, Structural Diversity and Supplier Diversity. By embracing these initiatives, ArvinMeritor continues to ensure our workforce is representative of the world in which we do business. We achieve this goal through our staffing, leadership and succession planning processes, and have recently increased our efforts to ensure that cultural diversity at ArvinMeritor has a global relevance and impact for our employees and company.

In addition, programs and policies such as Adoption Financial Assistance and the Family and Extended Medical Leave Act (FMLA) address the unique career and life needs of our diverse workforce. Flexible work options, such as compressed workweeks, flex time, job sharing, part-time positions and telecommuting may be available within a specific ArvinMeritor business group or function.

Learning Together
A number of efforts are underway to create and embrace a workforce that matches our markets. Today, for example, ArvinMeritor has local diversity councils in North America, South America, Europe and Asia Pacific. These councils provide a unique way to guide our efforts in addressing diversity at all levels in the organization.

Areas of focus for local diversity councils include:
  • Worldwide Diversity Week and "Diversity in Action" Photo Contest
  • Diversity Awareness and Inclusive Leadership Training
  • Cultural Awareness Training and Events
  • Community Relations Programs
  • Employee and Team Development
  • Attraction and Retention of Talent
  • Work-Life Practices and Programs
  • Diversity Communications and Surveys

Partnering for Change
As a leader in automotive technology, we particularly understand the importance of education in driving efforts for change and diversity. For that reason, we partner with universities and colleges who celebrate diversity. Some of these institutions are:

  • Brigham Young University • Purdue University
  • Clark Atlanta University • Spellman College
  • Georgia Tech • Tuskegee University
  • Indiana University • The University of Michigan
  • Michigan State University • The University of Notre Dame
  • Morehouse College • Vanderbilt University
  • Ohio State University

In addition, ArvinMeritor supports the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) at the campus and national levels.

At the corporate level, we are an active member of the Michigan Minority Business Development Council and participate in National Association of Black Automotive Suppliers events.
